Creditable coverage
Creditable coverage is prescription drug coverage expected to pay, on average, at least as much as standard Medicare Part D. Holding it — through VA Healthcare, TRICARE for Life, or CHAMPVA — means you can skip Part D with no late penalty, ever.
Why one adjective carries so much weight
Medicare's Part D penalty punishes going uncovered — unless your coverage is "creditable," in which case the clock never starts. All three programs this site covers qualify, which converts Part D from an obligation into an option for nearly every reader. Lose the creditable coverage and a 2-month SEP (the 63-day rule) bridges you back penalty-free.
The crucial asymmetry: creditability is a drug-coverage concept. Nothing about VA enrollment is creditable for Part B — the most expensive vocabulary confusion in veterans' Medicare. The term also powers the creditable coverage SEP, the enrollment window named for it.
You earned these benefits. Make them work together.
Whether you keep exactly what you have or add Medicare coverage alongside it, the right answer depends on your health, budget, and how you like to get care.
No cost, no obligation. You can also get help from Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY 1-877-486-2048), or your local SHIP office.
