Questions, answered

Can veterans get Medicare at 50?

Yes — through Social Security disability: Medicare begins automatically after 24 months of SSDI entitlement at any age, and immediately for ALS. A 100% VA rating doesn't grant Medicare by itself, but it qualifies the SSDI claim for expedited processing.

The path, compressed

SSDI approval starts two clocks: cash benefits, then — 24 months into entitlement — Parts A and B arrive in the mail, no application. ALS waives both waiting periods; ESRD runs its own rules. The VA rating and SSDI are separate determinations in both directions, with the practical bridge that SSA expedites 100% P&T veterans' claims and the VA medical file supplies the evidence.

What's different about Medicare at 50

The wraparounds aren't — TFL and CHAMPVA work identically once Part B is in place (and declining B to save the premium terminates them). The civilian market is: Medigap under 65 is state-patchwork and often expensive, making MA the usual capped option — with a full guaranteed-issue reset waiting at 65. The under-65 hub holds the whole cluster.

Does 100% P&T alone get me Medicare before 65?
No — under-65 Medicare runs through SSDI's 24-month clock (or ALS/ESRD rules). The rating expedites the SSDI claim; it doesn't substitute for it.
Will my premiums be higher because I'm under 65?
Medicare's premiums are the same; the under-65 difference is the Medigap market, where state rules and pricing vary — and where the age-65 reset eventually restores standard access.
