Questions, answered

Is VA Healthcare creditable for Part D?

Yes — VA Healthcare counts as creditable drug coverage for Medicare Part D, so enrolled veterans can skip Part D without ever facing the late enrollment penalty. It is not, however, creditable for Part B — the distinction that catches people.

What "creditable" buys you

Part D's penalty — 1% of the national base premium per uncovered month, permanently — only accrues against people without creditable coverage. VA enrollment clears the bar for as long as it lasts, and if it ever ends, a 2-month Special Enrollment Period opens; act within 63 days and the clock never starts. Keep your VA enrollment letter as proof for any future penalty question.

The half-rule that does the damage

VA coverage is creditable for D and not for B. Blur those and you get the classic mistake: a veteran who "has coverage" skips both at 65, dodges the small penalty, and walks into the large one. The asymmetry table on the penalties page is the thirty-second vaccine.

Can I add Part D later if I lose VA coverage?
Yes — a 2-month SEP opens when creditable coverage ends. Enroll within 63 days and no penalty applies.
Should I hold VA coverage and Part D at the same time?
You can — they never coordinate, and some veterans with civilian prescribers do. For most, VA pharmacy alone is cheaper and sufficient.

Whether you keep exactly what you have or add Medicare coverage alongside it, the right answer depends on your health, budget, and how you like to get care.
